FOURTEEN

LACEY

Today was Lacey’s thirtieth birthday.

When her mom turned thirty, she had a twelve-year-old. Lacey barely had a nest egg to her name.

Though that was probably something she had in common with her mother. She preferred to keep that list of things short.

Because it was her birthday, she’d declared the day off manual labor at Grammy’s house, which allowed Danny to spend the day at the Workshop catching up on client work.

Instead, Lacey putzed around 42 Clifton Street, finishing up pulling weeds and kitchen cleaning that she and Danny had started the day before. Then, she laid out a blanket in the grass wearing a bikini top and tons of sunscreen to re-read one of her favorite Nesbø books.

Already, it had to be one of her favorite birthdays of all time.

She was just finishing her make-up for the evening—a glittery eye with clear lip gloss to complement her dark purple sundress—as Danny stomped up the stairs, out of breath. He leaned on Lacey’s bedroom door frame, watching her put the finishing touches on her look.

“You look…stunning, Cherry.” He pulled his lower lip between his teeth, rubbing his chin. “Do you even know what those little dresses do to me?”

“I’m hoping they drive you wild.”

“They absolutely do.”

She batted at his shoulder as he dragged his eyes slowly up her body. Under his gaze, she popped and fizzed like Pop Rocks, leaving behind a shimmering sugar high.

“Y’all ready for the carnival?” Cam shouted from downstairs as she charged through the backdoor and up the stairs. “Happy birthday my sweetest princess unicorn,” she squealed, pulling Lacey into a bear hug.

“Ow, my ribs,” Lacey wheezed.

“Sorry, sorry, I just love you so much and I’m so happy you’re here!” Cam said, nearly vibrating out of her skin.

“You’re just excited for cotton candy and neon lights.”

“Okay, yes, I am excited about that but, Lace, we haven’t celebrated your birthday in…I don’t think ever, okay? I’m happy.” Now Cam did jump up and down. “Okay, I’m going to shower, and change, then we can go.”

She ran into the bathroom, squealing, “Danny, our girl’s thirty!” before slamming the door.

“She’s excited,” Lacey said, blinking in shock.

Danny stepped into her room, circling his arm around Lacey’s waist. With his palm on her lower back, he pulled her close, so that his thigh slotted just between her legs. It sent a thrill through her.

“My girl’s thirty,” he whispered, his words all heat on Lacey’s chest before he dipped down to kiss her on the forehead.
